Buying Tricycles from China in a Mixed Container: A Step-by-Step Guide for Dealers
Last checked: October 2026. Container capacity, minimum order and lead times depend on the model, packing method and supplier. Every figure in this guide is an example to discuss with your supplier, not a promise.
Many small and mid-size dealers don't need 30 units of one model. They need a few cargo trikes, a few passenger units and spare parts, ideally all in one container. This guide explains how mixed-container orders work and what to ask at each step.
1. What "mixed container" means
A mixed container (mixed FCL) is one container with more than one model, colour or version, sometimes from more than one production line. Its advantages are that you test several models at once, avoid paying for less-than-container (LCL) shipping, and can include spare parts.
Trade-offs:
- Each model may have its own minimum quantity on the production side. Ask for this in writing.
- Different packing methods (CBU, SKD, CKD) take different amounts of space, so the loading plan is calculated for each order.
- More models mean more paperwork lines on the invoice and packing list.
2. How to read a quote
A useful tricycle quote should state:
| Item | What to check |
|---|---|
| Model and version | Full spec: motor W or engine cc, voltage, battery type and Ah, box size, rated load |
| Incoterm | EXW, FOB (named port) or CIF/CFR (named destination port). FOB is common for buyers with their own forwarder |
| Unit price per packing method | CBU, SKD and CKD are priced differently |
| Options | Lithium vs lead-acid, rain roof, colour, logo, tyres |
| Spare-parts kit | What is included, and whether it is free or charged |
| Payment terms | Deposit and balance timing |
| Lead time | From deposit to ready-to-load |
| Validity | Prices for steel and batteries change; check the quote expiry date |
Tip: ask for one quote sheet covering all models in the container, so that totals, volumes and gross weights are consistent.
3. The loading plan
Before you pay the deposit, ask for a loading plan: a list or drawing showing how many units of each model and packing method fit in the chosen container (20GP, 40GP or 40HQ), plus the volume left for parts. Points to check:
- The plan is based on the actual crate dimensions, not a generic estimate.
- Gross weight stays within the container's and the road's legal limits.
- Batteries: lithium-ion battery vehicles are dangerous goods for sea freight (UN3556 under IMDG Amendment 42-24, mandatory since 1 January 2026), and the carrier must accept them (Hazcheck; Logisoft). Some lines restrict or surcharge these shipments. Settle this before booking.
4. CBU, SKD or CKD?
| Packing method | What arrives | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| CBU (fully built) | Ready-to-ride vehicles, sometimes crated | No assembly needed | Fewest units per container |
| SKD (semi-knocked-down) | Major sub-assemblies (cab, box and wheels removed) | More units per container; simple assembly | Needs a workshop and trained staff |
| CKD (completely knocked-down) | Parts and sub-assemblies | Most units per container; may qualify for lower duty in some markets | Needs an assembly line, jigs and quality control |
Duty treatment differs by market. For example, a Tanzania e-mobility report notes that SKD three-wheelers face roughly 46.7% in combined import taxes, and says that the reduced EAC CKD rate has been hard for some companies to obtain in practice (AfricaEMA report, 2025). Togo's trade portal mentions reduced duties for CKD assembly (InterCom Togo). Always confirm with a local broker how customs will classify SKD and CKD. Rules and their enforcement vary.
5. Pre-shipment inspection
Agree on an inspection checklist before production starts. Typical items:
- Frame and motor or engine numbers match the packing list.
- Specification check: motor label, battery label (V and Ah), box dimensions, tyre size.
- Function test: drive, brakes, lights, horn, reverse buzzer, charger.
- Paint, welding and rust protection on the cargo box.
- Spare-parts kit counted against the list.
- Photos and video of the loading, including the container number and seal.
You can use a third-party inspection company or have your sourcing partner inspect for you. See our services.
6. Export and import documents
Usually supplied from the China side:
- Commercial invoice and packing list (models, quantities, frame numbers, weights).
- Bill of lading.
- Certificate of origin. Some destinations accept FTA forms that may reduce duty; ask your broker.
- For lithium batteries: UN38.3 test summary, SDS, and the dangerous goods declaration where required (IATA guidance on test summaries).
Destination-specific conformity requirements vary. For example, Nigeria applies SONCAP to regulated products, and the Dominican Republic requires vehicle homologation and inspection before plating (INTRANT regulation). Requirements change. Confirm the current list with your importer or broker before production.
7. A typical order timeline
- Send your market, intended use and budget. We shortlist models (how it works).
- Receive a combined quote and draft loading plan.
- Confirm specs, options and documents; pay the deposit.
- Production. Lead time is confirmed per order.
- Pre-shipment inspection with photos and video.
- Balance payment, loading and shipping documents.
- Customs clearance at destination through your broker.
Frequently asked questions
Can I order different tricycle models in one container?
Yes. A mixed container can hold several models, versions and spare parts. Each model may still have a production minimum, and the exact number of units depends on the loading plan.
How many tricycles fit in a 40HQ container?
It depends on the model and on whether units ship CBU, SKD or CKD. Ask for a loading plan based on actual crate dimensions before paying a deposit.
What is the difference between SKD and CKD?
SKD ships major sub-assemblies that need simple assembly. CKD ships parts that need a full assembly line. Both fit more units per container than CBU, and duty treatment varies by country.
What documents do I need for electric tricycles with lithium batteries?
Besides the invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin, you need the battery's UN38.3 test summary and SDS. The carrier must accept the shipment as dangerous goods (UN3556 for lithium-ion vehicles).
